Muay Thai is an integral part of Thai culture and, for many communities, a way of life. With every new generation, thousands of aspiring young fighters battle it out in gyms and local arenas in the hope they may one day get to compete at one of the famous stadiums, in front of the TV cameras and passionate crowds.
Thailand has some 60 Muay Thai stadiums around the country that vary in size and quality of competitions. Most tourists prefer to visit the venues that meet international standards for safety, comfort and entertainment. In Bangkok, the two major stadiums are Lumpinee and Rajadamnern.
Numerous boxing stadiums have been established in the main tourist destinations; such as, Pattaya, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Phang Nga and Samui. The regular matches in these venues range from competitions between fighters from local boxing camps to foreigners who have intensively trained in one of the camps and feel they are ready to test their might.
Dozens of television stations broadcast live Muay Thai competitions to other countries around the world; such as Channel 7 Muay Thai and Jao Muay Thai (Channel 3). The Channel 7 studio near BTS Mo Chit is a popular venue for tourists who wish to witness live, broadcast title fights. Tickets are free. However, be warned, if you decide to go, you must wear a shirt with a collar, trousers (long pants) and closed shoes. You should also note that the audience members are packed in under the hot studio lights - the seating is incredibly uncomfortable, difficult to access and there are no refreshments.
